Sleeping While Shopping

I've gone to sleep a couple of times recently; in public. I've come home with needless plastic and food not organic when I had the choice otherwise.

It took 24 hours before I realized I could have bought walnuts in bulk instead of grabbing the three ziploc bags for a dollar off like I was at an I Love Lucy girdle sale. I looked at the bulk walnuts, nearly reached in and tasted one, but still grabbed the prebagged nuts and dropped them in the canvas bag that also held half a dozen empty cotton produce bags.

I couldn't wait to get to the car and eat a handfull.

Then I went to the grocery store for milk. Simply walking through the automatic doors makes me dizzy. But I made a straight line to the milk aisle avoiding even a glance at the magazines.

The internal routine began. Should I buy the milk in the carton or the milk in the glass jar. Back and forth. They're both local. This dariy captures the methane. That one has been around forever. I chose the carton. It lasts longer.

But then which carton; 1%, 2%, whole, non-fat? The cute guy had read whole milk is better for you. He may have made it up. I don't know. I grabbed the whole milk. I was getting cold in front of the refrigeration and wanted to leave.

"Why didn't you get organic?" he asked when I got home.

My mouth dropped open. I woke up. Between the carton, bottled or level of fat or not, organic never entered the equation. Or my mind.

But there's always next time. That is if I don't fall asleep.

If I had a nickle for everytime I 'fell asleep' while shopping I'd be rich! Although I usually call it being distracted by a two and four year old :) It's okay, it happens to the best of us.

I too read that whole milk is better for us...in In Defense of Food. Many lower fat milks add powdered milk which has a bad type of cholesterol. Even Clover Organic does that. We've switched to whole milk which has done nothing for my waistline but hopefully is better for my heart? Hard to know.

I read that about whole milk, too, although I can't remember where. We have a local dairy farmer who swears that his non-homogeonized milk is far better for health than homogeonized milk. I have no idea, since he has a vested interest, but the taste is incomparable (so's the price). Of course, his cows eat grass, so maybe that's the difference.

Can't tell you how many times I've FAWS (fallen asleep while shopping). We live in a unbelievably wasteful culture.

Kendra - I never considered before that I should read the ingredients of milk but I picked up a new brand of organic milk the other day and it had about eight ingredients in it (I put it back). I always thought milk was just milk.

I'm going to have to find some distractions. They sound more fun then sleep walking.

Donna - Don't you love it when you taste the difference.

Did you make up FAWS? That's too funny.

Jess Trev - Thanks for the link about milk. It's amazing how complicated such a seemingly singular simple food has become. I'm considering stopping milk all together and only eating ice cream! Ha.

seriously, you could work out before you go to the store what your best option is. that way when youre there you wont be overwhlemed for choice. its like trying to choose a paint colour for walls in the store. impossible. best to work it out before you enter and stick to your choice. good luck. sleeping while shopping can be fatal!
